The Gospel

Maybe you've been a Christian for years.

Maybe you grew up around church but aren't really sure what you believe.

Or maybe you're simply curious about Jesus and wondering why Christians believe God matters so much.

Wherever you're coming from, we're glad you're here.

We don't want Christianity to feel like a list of rules, a set of religious traditions, or something you have to pretend to understand before you can ask questions.

At the heart of Christianity is a person: Jesus Christ.

So what do we believe about Him? Why do we believe in God? What does it mean that God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit? And why does Jesus still matter in our everyday lives today?

 

Let's start with the most important thing.

 

The Gospel: The Good News

The word Gospel simply means good news.

And the good news of Christianity begins with God.

We were created for God

We believe that God created the world and created us intentionally. We aren't accidents or meaningless collections of cells. We were made by God and for God.

The Bible tells us that we were created in the image of God and that He made us to know Him, love Him and glorify Him.

 

"So God created mankind in his own image."

Genesis 1:27

 

But there is a problem.

 

Sin has separated us from God

 

Every one of us has sinned.

 

Sin isn't just doing really terrible things. At its heart, sin is turning away from God and choosing to live our lives our own way rather than trusting and obeying Him.

 

We've all fallen short.

We can try to be better people. We can do good things. We can be kind, generous and moral. But none of those things can erase the sin that separates us from a holy God.

 

The Bible says:

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

Romans 3:23

 

And that's where Jesus comes in.

Jesus came for us

God didn't leave humanity separated from Him.

Jesus, the Son of God, came into the world.

He lived the perfect life that we could never live. He willingly went to the cross and took the punishment that our sin deserved.

Jesus wasn't simply a good example who happened to die a tragic death.

He died for us.

He took our sin upon Himself so that we could be forgiven and brought back into relationship with God.

 

"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Romans 5:8

 

And then came the most important part.

Jesus rose again

Jesus didn't stay in the grave.

He physically rose from the dead, defeating sin and death.

 

The resurrection is at the centre of our faith because Christianity isn't ultimately about trying harder to become better people. It is about what Jesus has already done.

Because Jesus lives, we have hope.

Because Jesus lives, forgiveness is possible.

Because Jesus lives, death doesn't have the final word.

 

"He is not here; he has risen, just as he said."

Matthew 28:6

 

So what do we do with this?

The Gospel calls us to respond.

We believe in Jesus, turn from our sin, place our trust in Him and follow Him as Lord.

We don't become Christians because we've finally become good enough.

We come to Jesus because we realise we never could be good enough on our own.

Salvation is a gift of God's grace.

 

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God."

Ephesians 2:8
